Neutralization is generally the first step in treating acid mine water (gold, operational and abandoned coal mines). In Gauteng a volume of 240 Mℓ/d of acid mine water from gold mining requires treatment. At an acidity of 3 g/ℓ (as CaCO 3 ), a lime (CaO) price of R360 and a purity of 93 % the neutralization cost would amount to R57 million/a.

Mar 01, 2021 1. Introduction. Gold is essential for social development given its unique role in modern industrials and global economy (Chen et al., 2020).However, the process of gold refining is extremely unsustainable (Chen et al., 2019) and gold mining leads to land cover and land use change such as soil pit mining and forest removal (Asner and Tupayachi, 2017).
The MMG Rosebery mine in Tasmania is a productive, rich underground mining operation that has been producing gold, zinc, copper and lead concentrates for over 80 years. Waste slurry from the process plant is deposited into two tailings dams; a primary, older Tailings Storage Facility (TSF) near maximum capacity plus a newer, smaller one.
Wastewater from these processes can pollute water sources nearby and deplete freshwater supplies in the region surrounding the mine. Some mines, such as the Mountain Pass mine in southern California, have implemented waste-water recycling technologies, resulting in a huge decrease in water demands and liquid waste (Molycorp, 2012).
